Thoughts about tech & life

What I've been up to

On Oct 3 2025, I was riding my motorcycle home from the office. I was a mostly typical day. I was early, I usually have dinner around the office before heading home, but I wanted to surprise my wife by being home for dinner.

While going straight in the left lane, a car swerved into my lane and crashed into me.

I was going around 97KM/h, a rather laid back highway speed, you can see the speedometer in the Insta360 video.

You can see that I tried breaking, but there wasn’t much room to manuever. I tried to slipped through, but the front left bumper of the car hit around the center of my rear wheel.

The bike low-sided. My shoulder hit the pavement first. My head whiplashed, hitting the pavement hard enough to shake loose my helmet visor. I flung away and I never found it. Some amount of sliding and tumbling later, I end up at the side of the road.

Everything I told you are things I was able to piece together after the fact from the video from the Insta360 X5 mounted on my bike. I couldn’t remember a thing. My last memory was of me leaving the parking lot of the office.

The Insta360 was flung away, it was mounted on side mirror on the right, the side that fell. The side mirror together with the camera and some parts of fairing was thrown around. Some amount of time later, someone saw the blinking lights from the Insta360 and brought it over to put it by my side.

The impact on the head was enough to make me delirious. From the footage I can see some struggling to explain to me that they needed my unlock pin of screen lock so that they can call my loved ones. I gave them all kinds of numbers. Luckily one of them is the unlock pin. They proceeded to call my wife.

I kept acting like its the first time I reallized I crashed. I was lying on the ground, I kept popping my head up and asking the guy next to me where I was and what happened. I went on like an Abbot and Castello skit for 5 or 6 times. That guy was incredibly patient.

Ambulance finally arrived on scene. People packed my stuff, thrown the camera into my bag, and thus that’s all I know of what happened on scene that day.

Many motorist stopped, many helped. I don’t know any of their names. But I’m thankful of the kindness of strangers.

Scratched up pretty good. Visor gone. You can see the crack on the shell near where my temple would be.

First thing I actually remember, I am already in the ER. My brother was there, I didn’t know how I got there. I asked him what happen, where my wife was. She was on the her way here.

I fell on the right side, so most of the damage was there. I couldn’t really move on the right side. They cut away my jeans, exposing a nasty looking road rash along my right calf. My riding jacket and tshirt was also cut away, they were both really nice ones.

The put me in a neck brace. I’m not sure if I was still full of adrenalin or if the IV was full of some sweet painkillers, but nothing was really hurting if no one was trying to move me. But that neck brace, THAT was really uncomfortable.

Doctors came in and check my neck, but since I still can’t move my midsection they won’t take me out of the neck brace. I could move my left arm, I could feel my toes and wiggle them, I just can’t move my hips.

They sent me up to xray my spine. They seem to be worried I mightve broken my back. THey didn’t see anything the first time. They came back after a while, see if could move. I couldn’t. They sent me up to xray again. Again nothing on it. They left me for another while, then again another xray since I still can’t werk for them. After the 3rd xray, they were finally convinced that I didn’t break anything. There were just a lot of soft tissue damage around my lower back. They finally took off the neck brack. I’m not sure if I’m or relifed that I didn’t break my back or that I’m finally out of that damm neck brace.

Later, my wife would help with drinking and eating as I was having problem moving. After a couple of day I could , with some effort, start to roll on to one side. It would later take me almost a whole week from the accident before I was able to fully sit up. And couple more days after that before I can actually stand. I was already scrolling shoppee to decide which color wheelchair to get by the 3rd day. But turned out I was able to walk on my own by the end of the second week. I had this funny limp from this groin pain for the next 2 months, but I was able to move around.

That was later though, back in the ER, doctors and nurses poke and proded for a bit then left me alone for long stretches. I think they were trying to see if I would regain mobility and memory. No on both counts. I came into the ER with some ear bleed, doctors look into my ears with those little scope with the lights, trying to see if I got a brain bleed I guess. I came in delirious, that didn’t help. The ear bleed turned out to be nothing, might just be superficial wound. I was back to being coherent not long after I arrive in the ER, but I never gained any memory till this day.

Overall the whole ER experience has been of a lot of close calls. Did he break his neck. Phew, no. Did he bang his head really really hard? Eh.. not so much. Did he break his spine? Again no. Looking back, despite it suck so much to be involved in an accident. It’s been a series of one lucky break after another.

I did end up having a fractured scapular (shoulderblade bone) that needed a surgery but overall a lot of things could’ve been a lot worse. And it started even before I got to the hospital.

I wasn’t fast for highway speed but 95km/h isn’t slow either. I was wearing safety gear and a really good helmet, which isn’t something you could say for a lot of riders in KL. The jacket and the safety pads saved me from whole lot of raod rash, and I genuinely think that the helmet saved my life.

The car clipped the rear side of the bike, not the front, which could’ve pin me between to between the car and the bike. It wasn’t a good situation overall but many small coincidences allowed me to got through the other side still intact albeit a little worse for wear.

I still got stories to tell about experience after finally got admitted into the ward, as well as my sugery, but this post is long enough. I’ll tell the rest of it next time.
